1. Select your preferred version

2. Enter your ClickUp API token

3. Download the generated config file

4. Place it in your Claude Desktop config directory

Option 3: NPM Package (Manual Setup)

Use the published npm package - no build required:

@chykalophia/clickup-mcp-server

Option 4: Build from Source

For development or customization:

bash
git clone https://github.com/Chykalophia/ClickUp-MCP-Server---Enhanced.git
cd ClickUp-MCP-Server---Enhanced
npm install
npm run build

Get ClickUp API Token

1. Log in to ClickUp account

2. Go to Settings > Apps

3. Click "Generate API Token"

4. Copy the token

Configuration

Add to the MCP settings file:

🚀 Quick Setup Configuration

json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "clickup": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@chykalophia/clickup-mcp-server@latest"],
      "env": {
        "CLICKUP_API_TOKEN": "YOUR_API_TOKEN_HERE"
      }
    }
  }
}

> Keep the `@latest`. Without a version specifier, `npx` runs a matching

> binary already on your `$PATH` instead of fetching from the registry. If you

> have ever run `npm install -g @chykalophia/clickup-mcp-server`, that global

> copy wins silently and the server never updates — no error, it just keeps

> serving the old version. A version specifier (`@latest` or `@6.0.1`) bypasses

> the `$PATH` binary. To check what is actually running, look at the version

> reported in the MCP handshake rather than trusting the config.

🔧 Build from Source (Advanced Users)

If you prefer to build from source:

Standard Version

json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "clickup": {
      "command": "node",
      "args": ["/path/to/clickup-mcp-server/build/index-enhanced.js"],
      "env": {
        "CLICKUP_API_TOKEN": "YOUR_API_TOKEN_HERE"
      },
      "disabled": false,
      "autoApprove": []
    }
  }
}

Enhanced Efficiency Version ⭐

json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "clickup": {
      "command": "node",
      "args": ["/path/to/clickup-mcp-server/build/index-efficiency-simple.js"],
      "env": {
        "CLICKUP_API_TOKEN": "YOUR_API_TOKEN_HERE"
      },
      "disabled": false,
      "autoApprove": []
    }
  }
}

📝 Configuration Notes

  • Replace `YOUR_API_TOKEN_HERE` with your actual ClickUp API token
  • NPM method requires no installation or cloning - the package is downloaded automatically
  • Build from source requires cloning this repository and running `npm run build`

Reducing the Tool Surface (`CLICKUP_TOOLSETS`)

The server registers 156 tools by default. Every tool's JSON Schema is sent

to the client on connect — about 156KB — and re-sent on every reconnect. That

occupies context before your first prompt, and clients that bridge a local

server to a remote session pay the cost again on each connection rotation.

Most workflows need a fraction of it. Set `CLICKUP_TOOLSETS` to a comma-separated

list to register only what you use:

json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "clickup": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@chykalophia/clickup-mcp-server@latest"],
      "env": {
        "CLICKUP_API_TOKEN": "YOUR_API_TOKEN_HERE",
        "CLICKUP_TOOLSETS": "tasks,comments,custom-fields,attachments,lists,bulk,workspace"
      }
    }
  }
}

That example serves 60 tools instead of 156 — a 58% smaller payload.

ToolsetToolsCovers
`chat`19Chat channels, messages, reactions, replies
`lists`17Lists, folders, folderless lists
`time-tracking`14Time entries, timers, time summaries
`tasks`13Task CRUD, search, assignees, status
`goals`12Goals and goal targets
`views`12Views, filters, grouping, sorting
`comments`10Task, list, chat-view, threaded comments
`docs`9Docs, doc pages, doc search
`spaces`9Spaces and space tags
`dependencies`8Dependencies, links, dependency graphs
`custom-fields`7Custom field definitions and values
`webhooks`7Webhook management, processing, signatures
`checklists`6Checklists and checklist items
`workspace`6Workspaces, members, seats, plan, authorized user
`bulk`5Bulk create/update/delete, bulk custom fields
`attachments`2Task attachments and uploads

Notes:

  • Unset, empty, or `all` keeps every toolset — existing installs are unaffected.
  • Names are case-insensitive and `_` is treated as `-`, so `Custom_Fields` works.
  • Unrecognised names are ignored with a warning on stderr. If *nothing* in your

value resolves, the server falls back to all toolsets rather than starting

with no tools.

  • Resources (task, doc, checklist, comment, space, folder, list) are always

registered; they are not part of the tool payload.

  • `CLICKUP_DEBUG_TOOLS=true` adds `clickup_create_task_comment_raw_test`, a

raw-API debugging aid that is off by default.

Configuration File Locations

  • Cline VSCode Extension: `~/.vscode/extensions/saoudrizwan.claude-dev/globalStorage/saoudrizwan.claude-dev/settings/cline_mcp_settings.json`
  • Claude Desktop Apps:
    • macOS: `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json`
